Aikido. Delft, 2012

Osteoarthritis (OA) is one of the most common forms of arthritis.  It is a chronic condition in which the material that cushions the joints, called cartilage, breaks down. This causes the bones to rub against each other, causing stiffness, pain and loss of joint movement.

In collaboration with Philips Healthcare, a project was launched to encourage OA patients to overcome their fear of pain, in order to move more and regain control of their disease. Aikido is a neoprene knee compression sleeve, that contains a unique massage pack, consisting of a matrix of nerve-stimulating spheres immersed in Thermakool® gel. The massage pack can be heated or cooled and its benefits are inhibition of pain signals through stimulation of superficial cutaneous nerves, encouraging anaerobic exercise and benefits for the musculoskeletal system in the joint region thanks to the use of contrast therapy.
